SC-500: Security Controls for Cloud and AI Workloads Practice Tests

SC-500 (Implementing End-to-End Security Controls for Cloud and AI Workloads) is Microsoft's new security engineering exam — the successor to AZ-500, which retires on August 31, 2026. It validates skills in managing identity, access, and governance; securing storage, databases, and networking; securing compute including AI workloads; and managing security posture. The exam launched in beta in May 2026.

Passing SC-500 earns the new Microsoft Certified: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate credential (currently in beta). QuizPlay's free practice tests help you gauge readiness with the kinds of scenario-based and multi-step questions you'll encounter on exam day.

SC-500 Exam Details

Succeeding AZ-500: if you were planning to sit AZ-500, note that it retires on August 31, 2026, and SC-500 is its replacement. SC-500 keeps a substantial core of Azure security skills but extends coverage to securing AI workloads end to end. Because the exam is in beta, some logistics may still change before general availability.

SC-500 is a proctored, role-based Microsoft certification exam at the Associate level, currently offered in beta. Always confirm the latest details on the official exam page before scheduling.

  • Status Beta (launched May 2026)
  • Exam duration Not yet published for the beta — role-based exams typically run 100–120 minutes

  • Renewal Every 12 months (free)

Skills measured

From the official study guide dated April 26, 2026:

  • Manage identity, access, and governance (20–25%)
  • Secure storage, databases, and networking (25–30%)
  • Secure compute, including security for AI (20–25%)
  • Manage and monitor security posture (20–25%)

Question formats

Microsoft uses a mix of question formats across role-based exams, including multiple choice, case studies, drag-and-drop, build list, and hot area (hotspot). Beta exams follow the same formats, though Microsoft does not publish the exact count or mix ahead of time, and beta items are still being evaluated.

SC-500 Exam Preparation Tips

  • Follow the official study guide. The SC-500 study guide lists every skill measured — treat it as your checklist, and re-check it before exam day since beta objectives can be revised.
  • Coming from AZ-500? A lot carries over — Key Vault, NSGs, Defender for Cloud, and Microsoft Sentinel all remain core. What's new is AI workload security: protecting AI services, models, and agents is now an explicit exam objective, so plan dedicated study time for it.
  • Work hands-on with Defender and Sentinel. Configure Defender for Cloud plans, write Sentinel analytics rules, and lock down a real workload with network and identity controls. Scenario questions reward practical experience, not memorised portal screenshots.
  • Set beta expectations. Beta exams don't return a score at the end of your session — results typically arrive weeks later, once Microsoft finishes rescoring after the beta period closes. Budget for that delay if you need the certification by a specific date.
